Dari segi desain, PLAY membawakan konsep side slide yang apik, layar ponsel ini berdiagonal 4" bersensor capasitive dan berkedalaman 16 juta warna. Ponsel XPERIA PLAY ini bersertifikat Playstation, jadi ponsel ini dapat memainkan game playstation dengan mudah, nyaman, dan menyenangkan, karena ditunjang d-pad playstation key pada slidenya. Untuk mengabadikan moment penting, ponsel pintar ini dibekali kamera berkekuatan 5.0 megapiksel, autofokus, serta fitur canggih di dalamnya. Untuk menyimpan game koleksi anda, tak perlu khawatir, karena ponsel ini dipasangkan memori internal 8 GB dan dibekali memori eksternal 8 GB. Untuk menunjang permaina game dan OS Android 2.3 Gingerbread, PLAY ditanamkan prosesor Scorpion 1GHz dan kartu grafis Adreno 205.
